05/02/01 Rangers win!!! In a shocking development, for the first time since 1994, an Ancient Rangers team has started the year with a victory. Sadly, it was at the expense of their brethren, that the newly formed superpower of old-timers soccer, the Rangers2, achieved success on their maiden voyage to the pitch. In a razor sharp, fiercely contested, down to the wire contest, the new kids on the block subdued the venerable, revered, once-mighty Ancient Rangers by a score of 7-2, Notable by his absence in the scoring column for the original fab 11, was last years GOLDEN BOOT winner W.T., (it’s a great day to be a ranger) Browne. When asked by this observer (because he sure didn’t play worth a shit) to explain his paucity of goal scoring magic, “the boot” had only this to say: wait until next week. Game highlights for the progenitors included Dave Doyle’s miraculous save of a 145 mph Gary Dahle blast when the game was still very much in doubt. His arm and shoulder surgery are scheduled for Wednesday, May 9th.. Like most good caring, loving parents however, the Ancient’s suppressed their egos, and their formidable talents to allow their latest offspring their day in the sun. When interviewed after the game, Ranger stalwart and member for life, Mark Belgrade was quote as saying, “ we did the right thing, but woe unto them in the rematch!” In other mildly interesting, but insignificant league action, another upstart offspring committed parenticide, as the Kickers2, defeated 3-time champion Kickers Alte-Kameraden in their game at the immaculately groomed NSC. Ranger wannabes, White Bear, offered their usual “we started with seven guys” excuse for their tie with a resurgent Silverbacks team that was unfortunate to not win by five goals. Upstart newcomers, Bloomington (is there a team name or are we suffering an identity crisis?), did not deem their game sufficiently important to report their score against defending champion Canes. That score will follow in a later edition. To all you faithful readers of Ranger Bob’s Ramble, please note the date for Dubuque's annual tournament is August 11th, and the 8th Annual Ancient Rangers soccer tournament will be held the weekend of September 16th. See you next week!!! “Ranger Bob” |
